The state of Virginia is extremely fortunate to have these devoted, talented, passionate, & intelligent leaders! Without this caliber of leadership no dynamic change can even begin to occur. I am a retired Elementary/Middle School educator having taught in all K-8 grades and I truly believe that my students’, regardless of what grade they were in, who struggled in school, began having difficulty as soon as they entered the public school system! Therefore, the focus must be placed even before they begin Kindergarten, it needs to begin in Preschool! Preschool teachers definitely need to be paid “excellent salaries”, not just “living wages”, that reflect the importance of their jobs’ impact on the lives of our communities’ BEST ASSETS, our future leaders, community workers, etc. We will all benefit from this improvement or we will all suffer & pay more in the long run, including ruining many lives along the way!!! I hope the CALIFORNIA leaders in this audience were seriously listening & taking serious note of what was said & suggested by these Early Childhood Advocates!!! Well done!!!! Thank you!!

One suggested edit is to remove the remark located at 3:15, "...you've got Kindergarteners who are behind already because they haven't had the opportunity for someone sit down with them and talk about how to get along with other children." This statement propels the myth that children are "behind" because they are still "developing social emotional skills." As early childhood educators, we need to strive to support the learning needs of all children without labeling them as "behind" or "deficient." We also have a duty to share this truth with the world in order to provide a culturally and developmentally appropriate foundations for young children to thrive.
